Monthly Message from our Rector

Who wrote that one?

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself grasping at straws when listening to a piece of music and trying to remember who wrote it. I might know the tune, lyrical content, even song title, but just can’t remember who wrote it.

So, I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t know who the Korahites or sons of Korah were. And to be honest their names appear only in small print inscriptions on 11 of the Psalms.

These temple worship leaders (1 Chronicles 6:31-33) wrote words of longing that are in many senses as personal and heartfelt in their devotion as any of David’s. And they too often write from a place of struggle, that can resonate with the difficulties in our lives.

But although their names may not be on our lips, many of their words are written on our hearts:

  • ‘Be still and know that I am God’

  • ‘Deep Calls to deep’

  • ‘As the deer pants for water’

  • ’God is our refuge and strength’

  •  ‘Better is one day in your courts’.

These words come from some of the most beloved psalms – psalms 42, 46 and 84. We will be reflecting on and learning from these psalms across our October sermons, from Sunday 12th.

We will begin our worship in October with a special joint Benefice Service and shared lunch (at St Mary’s Woodchester) for our Swedish visitors. And here we will finish our current sermon series: slowing down to Jesus’s pace (as we slow down our outer and inner lives and open ourselves up to God) and lead into this new one as we hear and explore Jesus’s call to ‘Abide with me’ in John Chapter 15.

So, as we spend October listening to many of the most beloved verses in scripture, I pray that these will speak to you anew and be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path.
