St. Mary's Woodchester Church

The ‘Tuesday Gang’

Churchyard Maintenance Team

As a Church we are responsible for two Churchyards.

We have a Closed Churchyard (old Woodchester Church) off Church Lane which is kindly maintained by Stroud District Council.

Our main Churchyard, in which the current St.Mary’s Church building stands, is maintained by a group of volunteers who meet every Tuesday morning, unsurprisingly called ‘The Tuesday Gang’!

We are responsible for grass cutting, tree and path maintenance plus other gardening jobs which require weekly attention.

Our duties vary depending on the seasons but we aim to meet in the Churchyard every Tuesday for two hours at approximately 08:15am, with a cup of tea at 09:30 am We are a small group whose main aim is to keep the Churchyard as attractive a place as possible for villagers and visitors of all ages to enjoy as well as a peaceful and sacred environment for those who wish to pay respect or mourn the loss of close friends or relatives.

We also want to encourage wildlife whilst keeping a balance on maintaining an accessible and attractive green space and in this aspect of our work we have close ties with the Eco Church Group.

We are not experts in Churchyard maintenance. But if you are interested in doing a little bit for the community by mowing the grass in summer or helping with some of our other gardening jobs, please do not be put off by thinking you have to be a proficient hoticulturalist!

Whoever you are and whatever your interests you would be more than welcome to join us.

Come along and try it out for a couple of weeks and see how it goes (all tools provided). We are always looking for more volunteers.
