Christian Teaching

Christian teaching is offered in a variety of ways at St Mary’s, with Sunday sermons, special courses and homegroup discussions all playing a part, helping us explore the current theme or topic. The various themes studied by the benefice throughout the year are prayerfully and carefully planned out by our Rector and the ministry team.

Throughout 2025 we are concentrating on what it really is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ; to let the Holy Spirit transform us and live out that transformation in our everyday lives.

Alongside the formal teaching, we also try to support each other as a congregation, and through the Spirit encourage one another from our own faith experience, allowing everyone to explore and grow stronger in their own faith and at their own pace.

Whatever your faith background and wherever you are in your personal journey - long term Christian or right at the start - you will be valued and welcomed at St Mary’s.

Bible Reading support

There are many opportunities today for reading the Bible from hard copy formats, with supporting aids, to digital Bible online or in app format.

One of these is Lectio 365, a free daily devotional app that helps you pray the Bible every day. With the Lectio 365 app you pray the Bible by meditating on the scriptures and asking God to speak through them. This is a sustainable and life-giving model of spiritual formation and prayer for ordinary people.

The Lectio app available for Android or iPhone. Full details can be found on the 24-7prayer.com website.

There are many useful aids on this site including video and courses for Lent etc – highly recommended

Special courses

We are running a Lent course again this year, with most of St Mary’s regular homegroups and prayer groups joining in – see the March edition of Common Ground. Building on our theme of discipleship we will be following the course by John Mark Cromer – ‘Practicing the Way’ with associated course materials and book.

Sunday sermons

As an important component of the Christian teaching at St Mary’s each sermon is recorded and made available as an audio file to everyone online for catch-up or further reflection as required:
