Do you remember?
In November we will be drawing on the theme of remembering, starting with remembering those who have encouraged us in our faith and really made a difference to our walk with Jesus. So, who has encouraged you in your faith? Perhaps famous followers of Jesus (like Mother Theresa, C.S Lewis or Tom Wright) have encouraged you via books or broadcasting. Or perhaps it is a more personal encouragement from people, who might be only known to a few, such as family or other church members. But let’s go deeper than simply identifying the people. Given that we have started to really think about spiritual practices this year, I have been struck by the question of ‘how have these people encouraged us in our spiritual practices?’ And by spiritual practices I mean how we read the Bible, pray, fast, spend time in silence, show generosity, share our faith, serve others, keep sabbath, be community and build community. So can I encourage you to reflect on these questions: Who has encouraged you in your faith?
How specifically have these people encouraged you in your spiritual practices? What has changed as a result and is there anything you would like to do differently? Who can you share this encouragement with? Who can you encourage?
November Sermon Series
Our new sermon series in November will be drawing on the theme of remembrance. On All Saints Sunday we will remembering those who have gone before us in faith. On Remembrance Sunday we will be remembering those who have given their lives or had them taken away for our freedoms. Then we will be picking up on two other biblical themes about remembrance: 1) Remembering others in our prayers and interceding for them faithfully, as we see so often in St Paul’s letters and 2) The major focus of remembrance in scripture - remembering all that God has done for us.
