Monthly Message from our Rector

Forty Days In The Desert

This Lent we will be continuing to look at the themes of discipleship, spiritual rhythms and practices but we will be doing this in a different way and with a very different focus.

We will be joining together with Lectio 365, which I know many of you use for daily Bible readings, prayer and reflection.

For the first time they are producing a lent course, weekly videos and focused materials that will we use in Sunday sermons, as well as special lent morning prayers.

All of these will draw us into the desert and wilderness with Jesus, alongside ancient wisdom from the Desert Fathers and Mothers, whose lives and challenges speak into ours today.

So who were the Desert Fathers and Mothers (and what have they ever done for us)? These early Christian disciples in Egypt, were hermits and the founders of communities of discipleship that birthed the whole Celtic Church model as well as western monasticism.

Their impact and influence lives on today, but this Lent we’ll go back to the original words and stories that have helped shape the Church and let them, as well as God’s Word, shape and challenge us today.

So can I invite you to join us as we journey into the dessert?

  • Join us on Ash Wednesday (10am Rodborough and 7:30pm St Mary Woodchester),

  • on the Sunday’s in Lent ,

  • in daily reflections on Lectio 365

  • by joining one of our midweek groups running the Lent Course. If are not currently part of a midweek group, can I encourage you to join one for the season of Lent .
